Proofreading is generally the last step in the editing process and should only be instituted once all other steps have been completed. Proofreaders go over the text with a fine-toothed comb, checking for any lingering errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, hyphenation, numerals, abbreviations, etc. and finalizing a polished typeset to be sent on for formatting. An editorial evaluation can help determine if a manuscript is ready for this step in the editing process.
